Denise and I left the house really early to help set up for GDA's Sixth Annual "Ride for Guide" Motorcycle Poker Run and BBQ. By 8:30am, Denise and I left GDA to go to stop one at Bear Divide which is located in between Santa Clarita Valley and San Fernando Valley. Just as we finish setting up in the freezing wipping wind, our first riders arrived. The riders kept telling us that it was soooooooo cold and windy that with all their leather gear, they were freezing cold and did not want to take off their helmets and gloves when they stopped. By 10:30am, we packed up the stop and jumped into the heated car for the trip down the mountain and back to a nice 80 degree GDA for the BBQ. While Denise helped with the raffle, I took a nap behind the raffle table for the rest of the day. WOW, it sure was a long, but fun day! Bear Divide

May 18, 2008 - Ride for Guides

Yesterday was GDA’s Ride for Guide motorcycle poker ride. This year I borrowed Jet a male black lab for the day, this guy is so full of energy and life so happy to say Hi to anyone (really good for this fundraiser). From what was told to us volunteers last year we only had 100 pre registrations and a close to 500 people count but this year we have 300 pre registration and from what I heard the final people count was over 600 Woohoo. The day went really well I was in charge of stop 1 at Pilot Travel Center/Wendy’s in Castaic (lots of fun) we had three graduates their families four puppy raisers with three puppies in training and one in training dog who got to come out for the day. About 15 mins after we finished setting up our first group of riders pulled in and it did not stop till 12 noon when the last two riders pulled out on there way stop 2. We pack up and were on our way back to GDA to start helping with the food, raffles, pictures, mingle, ect…
The group at stop 1 had such a great time that we are all going to email the Ride coordinator and till her that she does not need to get volunteers for stop 1 next year as we all will be back next year. After all the riders were gone at 3pm it was time to head home but I did not leave alone. I taken home Gunnar for the next three days :)

When we got home I filled the wading pool (it been over 100 all day) for Gunnar and Andromeda to play in boy were they happy to splash, dig, be sprayed with the hose for the next half hour then a quick rub down and into the nice AC house. What a cute wet Gunnar

I can't belive that I only took three photos all day where last year I had over 100 pic. (then again this year I was at one of the poker lines were the ride drew their cards and last year I was mengeling with my pup)

We started today very early; Denise & I had to be at GDA by 8am to set up and the what to do meeting for the Fourth Annual Motorcycle “Ride for Guide” Poker Run & BBQ Were all the four legged volenteers all recived a Kamra's Koset Collar eather in flames or poker cards. Denise and I are stationed at stop one a Shell station at the base of Angeles Crest, so we had to leave GDA by 8:30am so Denise and I can bring up all the supplies for our stop. There are six other puppies in training and their raisers (Yasmin & Laurie, Watcher & Lynne, JJ & Ellen, Cyrus & Becky, Kipper & Nolena, and Carlee & Georgia) and one working Guide (Doshi & Larry) with me at this stop.

We arrived at the Shell station for set up and to wait for the first riders to arrive from GDA, by 9:45 we had our first two riders come in, they we the first of a very busy morning. 500 riders later and me not having any traffic problems with the very, very loud bikes; we were able to brake down our stop and head back to GDA by 11:45 and have our lunch. Then Rachel and Lorri were handing out new assignments for different volunteer stations around GDA.
Denise & I were drafted to help serve the food, well I slept under the table in the shade while Denise checked wrist bands and handed out plates, chips, and cookies. GDA was only planning for 300 riders so someone had to run to Sam’s Club after they ran out of some of the food.

By 4:15 when they announced the winner of the poker run a guy who had drawn five aces and the second place was five kings, Lorri started to draw the winners for the 35 raffle baskets full of fun motorcycle store gift cards, restaurants gift cards, Harley memorabilia, Dog themed baskets, ect… as the last basket number was announced and Lorri thanked everyone for coming and making today the biggest Ride yet and hope to see everyone again next year so save the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend in your calendars; all the riders gathered up their leather jackets and helmets and were on their way home. Now it’s time for Denise & I to go home also. When Denise look at the clock and it is 5pm already. Gosh but it was a big long day.
